Mercury as a neurotoxin

When the EPA passed the Clear Air Act in 1990, it never included limits on mercury, a neurotoxin to developing children and fetuses, but their recent ruling does.

What does this ruling mean to you? CNN's William Hudson says:
Despite federal limits on emissions of mercury from other sources, such as waste incinerators, there have been no limits on coal-fired power plants, which the EPA says constitute the single largest source of mercury emissions.
"As a mom, I'm especially excited to know that millions of mothers and babies will now be protected from mercury poisoning," said Mary Anne Hitt, director of Beyond Coal Campaign, a clean energy advocacy group.
"We all teach our kids the simple rule that if you make a mess you should clean it up - and now polluters will have to follow that same rule," she wrote in an e-mail conversation.
"Mothers around the country who have been worried about mercury pollution causing learning disabilities and other problems for their kids will be able to sleep easier tonight."
Health experts have known for a long time that mercury causes damage to developing fetuses, with long-term effects on the child.
Methylmercury, found in fish and shellfish, can harm a child's thinking, language, fine motor skills, memory, attention, and visual spatial skills when exposed in the womb.
One study estimates that for each part per million of mercury found in a mother's hair -- a common way of testing for mercury exposure -- her child loses approximately 0.18 IQ points.
Outbreaks of methylmercury poisoning have resulted in some children being born with severe disabilities, even when their mothers did not show signs of nervous system damage. But adults are at risk for mercury poisoning too; symptoms can include impairment of vision, speech, hearing and walking.

The science of air pollution

When people think about air pollution, they usually think about smog, acid rain, CFC's, and other forms of outdoor air pollution. But did you know that air pollution also can exist inside homes and other buildings? It can, and every year, the health of many people is affected by chemical substances present in the air within buildings.

They recommend a wonderful activity for older students, which might make a terrific science fair project here. But young children can begin thinking about clean air with some prompts such as the one in the following scenario:
Many communities are trying to do their part to reduce the level of black carbon pollution in the air. It is difficult for a small city or town to restrict driving or to impose pollution regulations on trucks and automobiles. However, another source of soot is from the burning ofwood in fireplaces and charcoal briquets in barbeques.
Some communities have imposed a ban or sharp restriction on the recreational use of wood-burning fireplaces and barbeques. It is unclear whether these new regulations will be enforceable, nor how effective the new ordinances will be in reducing emissions. However, one could easily argue that these recreational activities are non-essential, and that anything which will help reduce soot production is worth trying.
Ask the children to choose a side and debate the reasons soot should or should not be restricted.

Air Pollution

We are concerned with your health and purifying the air you breathe for a healthy body, able to enjoy all the things you do. Recent federal government budget cuts, however, are less concerned with these factors.

Some national examples, according to John Miller of the Associated Press include:

In Texas, Gov. Rick Perry, a Republican presidential candidate, signed a budget that cut funding for the Texas Commission for Environmental Quality more than 30 percent, from $833 million to $565 million. That included reducing air quality inspections and assessments.
Oregon, for example, reduced air pollution monitoring, as the Department of Environmental Quality faces budget cuts through 2013.
The state Department of Environmental Protection in Pennsylvania has seen general fund support slip from $217 million in 2009 to $140 million, levels last seen in 1994.

Further, the Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Air Act may be a good start, but is not enough to protect Americans from air pollution. Says Amy Mail of the National Resources Defense Council, the "EPA’s proposed emission reductions for toxic air pollutants are based on the maximum achievable level of control in 1999, not on today’s technologies." This kind of outdated measurement may result in procedures that are more like bailing water out of a leaking boat than plugging the hole.

There is still much to be done by factories, by the government, by legislation, but in the mean time, purify the air you breathe with us. It's one thing you can control in an unsure world.

How we Breathe

You take in 3,000 gallons of oxygen per day, simply being alive. Our systems clean and purify that air to keep you healthier.

But how does the body take in air?

Airways

The airways are pipes that carry oxygen-rich air to your lungs and carbon dioxide, a waste gas, out of your lungs. The airways include your:
  • Nose and linked air passages (called nasal cavities)
  • Mouth
  • Larynx (LAR-ingks), or voice box
  • Trachea (TRA-ke-ah), or windpipe
  • Tubes called bronchial tubes or bronchi, and their branches
Air first enters your body through your nose or mouth, which wets and warms the air. (Cold, dry air can irritate your lungs.) The air then travels through your voice box and down your windpipe. The windpipe splits into two bronchial tubes that enter your lungs. A thin flap of tissue called the epiglottis covers your windpipe when you swallow. This prevents food or drink from entering the air passages that lead to your lungs. Except for the mouth and some parts of the nose, all of the airways have special hairs called cilia that are coated with sticky mucus. The cilia trap germs and other foreign particles that enter your airways when you breathe in air. These fine hairs then sweep the particles up to the nose or mouth. From there, they're swallowed, coughed, or sneezed out of the body. Nose hairs and mouth saliva also trap particles and germs.

Lungs and Blood Vessels

Your lungs and linked blood vessels deliver oxygen to your body and remove carbon dioxide from your body. Your lungs lie on either side of your breastbone and fill the inside of your chest cavity. Your left lung is slightly smaller than your right lung to allow room for your heart. Within the lungs, your bronchi branch into thousands of smaller, thinner tubes called bronchioles. These tubes end in bunches of tiny round air sacs called alveoli. Each of these air sacs is covered in a mesh of tiny blood vessels called capillaries. The capillaries connect to a network of arteries and veins that move blood through your body.
The pulmonary artery and its branches deliver blood rich in carbon dioxide (and lacking in oxygen) to the capillaries that surround the air sacs. Inside the air sacs, carbon dioxide moves from the blood into the air. At the same time, oxygen moves from the air into the blood in the capillaries. The oxygen-rich blood then travels to the heart through the pulmonary vein and its branches. The heart pumps the oxygen-rich blood out to the body. The lungs are divided into five main sections called lobes. Some people need to have a diseased lung lobe removed. However, they can still breathe well using the rest of their lung lobes.

Asthma & Air Purifying

Asthma is a two-step disease: a chronic inflammation of the airways that may be so subtle that it goes unnoticed, punctuated by periodic flare-ups into asthma's obvious and sometimes deadly symptoms.

The California Department of Health Sciences stated asthma attacks "can be triggered by exposures and conditions such as respiratory infections, house dust mites, animal dander, mold, pollen, exercise, tobacco smoke, and indoor and outdoor air pollutants."

The use of an BreatheEz Air Purifier is of value in removing particles of dust, mold, bacteria and pollens from the air. Use as directed.

Testimonials--
"....I recently was diagnosed with allergies and asthma, waking up in the middle of the night unable to breathe and being rushed to the emergency room for treatment. Since installing the BreatheEz Purifier in my home, I have not returned to the hospital and find a full night’s sleep a pleasure. I am breathing deeper using full lung capacity. My attacks are infrequent now, and I rarely need an inhaler...." --Nancy A. Long, Ft. Lauderdale, FL

Clean Air Tactic in Chinese Apartments

Hong Kong is known as a smoggy city, and a chain of apartments in Hong Kong has found a new way to attract potential renters - by offering cleaner air!

Chi Residences has teamed up with Oxyvital, makers of air purifiers, and has installed them in each of its apartments, usually rented out as short-term home arrangements. These purifiers act somewhat like a catalytic converter in a car - "breaking down carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and other gases into oxygen, hydrogen and carbon dioxide." The resulting clean air pumped into the apartment is compatible with the World Health Organization's standards for clean indoor air. Therefore, Chi Residences can make the claim that "clean air is included in the rent."

All over the world, people are making changes to their homes to ensure they are breathing the cleanest air possible. Why not make the same changes in your home? Call Air Purifying Systems and Solutions today to get started!

Air and Water Pollution Facts - Part 2

1. Some studies have confirmed that long-term exposure to air pollution can cause lower IQ in children.

2. The number of cars on our roads is expected to significantly grow in years to come; meaning higher levels of air pollution.

3. Smog is one of the worst forms of air pollution and is mostly created by fossil fuel power plants.

4. India is among countries worst affected with water pollution. This is because 80% of India's urban waste ends up in rivers such as Ganges.

5. China is world's biggest emitter of carbon dioxide, followed by United States.

6. Water pollution could soon lead to serious water shortage in many parts of the world. Only 3% of the water on the Earth is freshwater.

7. The quality water-filtering system is good way to protect yourself from water pollution as much as possible, especially multi-layered home water filtering system.

8. There are many industries that not obey the rules about dumping waste, which is why we have so many polluted rivers and other water bodies.

9. It is estimated that there are between 2.5-3 billion people in the world living without the adequate sanitation systems.

10. Waste water and sewage waste are the main source of different water pollutants which enter our rivers and other water bodies.

11. One of the most dangerous forms of water pollution is drinking water polluted with arsenic because arsenic is highly poisonous metalloid. Drinking water polluted with arsenic can lead to cancer and many other diseases.

12. Noise pollution is one of the most neglected forms of pollution despite causing huge environmental damage, especially in oceans.

13. Huge oil spills like the recent Gulf of Mexico oil spill are among the worst types of pollution on our planet, particularly because their negative effects last for very long time, even after cleanup efforts have ceased.

14. Ozone pollution has the potential to become significant contributor to climate change because ozone is very potent greenhouse gas.

15. Ocean acidification is one of the worst types of ocean pollution. Our oceans are becoming more and more acidic because greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels burning are constantly rising.

New Jersey Has Their Share of Air Pollution

On Wednesday, September 21st, 2011, a group by the name of Environment New Jersey released a study which named four metropolitan areas in New Jersey among the top 20 American regions with the worst air pollution. Others on the Top 20 list include California, Baltimore, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia, all high on the list.

The study claims that bad air days happen more often than we thing - and more frequently than EPA data shows. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection is currently working on improving air quality and state that air quality is important to the administration and they want to protect the health of their residents.

Ozone, a chemical variant of oxygen, is one of the major components to what make New Jersey's air so bad. Ozone can cause irritation to the lungs, nose, throat and can flare up symptoms of those with respiratory issues. It is also very dangerous for young children and the elderly. Exposure to these conditions can lead to an increase in sickness and hospital visits.

A good portion of New Jersey's air pollution comes from industrial power plants and car exhaust. You can see huge spikes of contamination during rush hour - to and from work - as exhaust floods the streets of New Jersey's cities.

Environment New Jersey claims that this problem is bigger than anyone anticipated and while they did not expect to see the EPA's recent proposals rejected, they're still looking for help to clean up our air!

Level Orange Pollution Watch in Texas

On Thursday, September 8th, a Level Orange Air Pollution Watch was set in place for the areas around central Texas. Reports said that a smoky haze had settled over the area because of fires nearby.

The warning, from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, was directed toward the elderly, very young children, and individuals with lung problems like asthma or emphysema.

When dealing with situations like this, it is important to carefully monitor your breathing. Heavy breathing and increased coughing or sneezing can be cause for alarm.

A Level Orange Watch means that those with the aforementioned conditions should limit their outdoor activities. Exposure to these levels of pollution can have several negative effects including:

  • reduced lung function (the amount of oxygen taken in is less than usual)
  • asthma can be aggravated
  • lungs can become inflamed and the lung lining can become damaged
  • risk of developing lung illnesses increases.
In this case, the citizens of central Texas have no control over the air outside. However, controlling the air inside can help to lessen the effects of the outside toxins and pollution.

You can protect your loved ones from the effects listed above, with a system from Air Purifying Systems and Solutions! You can rest assured that although the air outside is less than clean, you are breathing the cleanest air possible while you're at home!

President Obama Rejects EPA Proposal

The Environmental Protection Agency recently proposed a rule that would have reduced emissions of smog-causing chemicals. Unfortunately that rule was rejected by President Obama, saying that it would impose a burden on industry and local governments during a time of economic distress. It has been argued, by business groups and Republicans that the proposed rule would cost a great deal of money and thousands of jobs.

The EPA proposed lowering the ozone standard to 60 - 70 parts per billion, throwing hundreds of American counties out of compliance with the Clean Air Act and requiring new emissions controls. During the Bush administration, that number was set to 75 parts per billion and the current administration will do its best to follow those standards for now.

Ozone, combined with other compounds can create smog and contribute to many ailments such as asthma, lung disorders and heart problems. When the EPA learned of the rejection of their proposal, a variety of emotions ranging from disappointment to fury made it very clear that they are not happy with the decision. Perhaps the proposal will be revisited in the future.

Air Contaminants - Lead

Found naturally in the environment, as well as in man-made products, Lead is a typical air contaminant.

One of the largest sources of lead in the air is from fuels from vehicles on the road. Since strict emissions requirements were put into effect my the EPA, the amount of lead in the air has decreased significantly since 1980 but is still part of why the air we breathe is contaminated today.

Lead can also be deposited into our soil from the air and can find itself in our drinking water supply. This can affect growth of plants, health of animal and the general state of the ecosystem.

Lead is also extremely harmful to the human body, causing neurological defects in children, negatively affecting kidneys, the immune system and has even been linked to behavioral problems, learning deficits and lowered IQ in young children.

Do what you can to keep your air clean. Get started by contact us at Air Purifying Systems & Solutions.

Help for Asthmatic Children

The ideal situation for children with asthma (or any children, for that matter) is to live in a smoke-free home. Unfortunately this still is not a reality. Recent studies show that having and air purifying system in the home can help to lessen the effects of second hand smoke.

One specific study, funded by John's Hopkins University, took place in Baltimore, where 115 inner-city children who suffer from asthma and live with a smoker were given HEPA air purifiers. One third of the homes received air cleaners for the living room and child's bedroom. Another third received the same devices as well as educational courses with a nurse on the dangers of secondhand smoke. The last third were the control group, only receiving the air cleaners at the end of the study.

Over the course of the six month study, children with air cleaners showed great improvements in wheezing, coughing and other symptoms they had previously displayed. The results added up to an entire month with no symptoms at all. Though these improvements speak wonders about air cleaners and purifiers, they are no substitute for a smoke free environment.

NASA Works to Improve Air Quality

Throughout the month of July, NASA, working with planes, weather balloons and ground stations, has been gathering information on how pollutants such as ozone and particles are reacting in our atmosphere.

The short-term goal of NASA's research is to learn more about these pollutants, where the come from and where they travel. Long0-term goals include being able to monitor the level of air pollutions hour-by-hour by satellite. This type of research can help the Environmental Protection Agency and other parts of government enforce air quality standards.

To gather research, NASA has chosen to fly over the skies of the Baltimore-Washington area, an area with extremely polluted air.

One reason NASA picked the Baltimore-Washington traffic corridor to fly over is that it's a particularly bad place to inhale. Maryland is known for frequently violating the national ambient air quality standard for both ozone and for particulate matter. While air conditions have improved over the years, there are still millions of Americans living in places that fail to meet EPA air quality standards.

NASA is hoping to continue this research in an effort to improve air quality world-wide!

Remember that taking steps to improve the air quality in your own home or business is as simple as phone call to Air Purifying Systems and Solutions!

Make Changes to Control Asthma

Asthma itself has become better understood in the past few years. Asthma is a two-step disease: a chronic inflammation of the airways that may be so subtle that it goes unnoticed, punctuated by periodic flare-ups into asthma's obvious and sometimes deadly symptoms.

The overwhelming majority of children with asthma are also allergic to the most common allergens such as animal dander, cockroaches, dust mites, mold and mildew, and pollen. Studies show that the severity of asthma correlates with the degree of allergy and with the levels of allergen in the home or environment.

Take control over the asthma situation in your home or office by following these tips:

  1. If you smoke, quit, or at least don't smoke in the house.

  2. Control dust mites.

  3. Control mold. Molds grow wherever there is dampness; fix leak and do not put carpet over concrete slab floors.

  4. Reduce pollen by using an air conditioner.

  5. The use of an BreatheEz Air Purifier is of value in removing particles of dust, mold, bacteria and pollens from the air. Use as directed.

You’ll notice a difference soon after installation, and, after a few days of breathing activated oxygen, you may even feel that your overall vitality has improved. While we make no health claims regarding the BreatheEz Air Purifier , our customers—especially asthma and allergy sufferers—consistently report increased feelings of wellness, less stressful breathing and a noticeably more pleasant living environment following installation of this remarkable device.

Office Installations

Indoor air pollution is a leading public health concern. Beginning in the '90s, the trend toward energy efficient workplaces literally trapped a variety of contaminants indoors. The increased use of chemicals in business and industry led to a buildup of toxic pollutants in our work environment that came to be known as Sick Building Syndrome.

Initially, the impact of Sick Building Syndrome was elusive. Employees complained of not feeling well, however diagnosis was difficult. Eventually the impact of poor indoor air quality became clear: decreased productivity, absenteeism, worker's comp and liability claims - even litigation! Sick Building Syndrome became a nightmare for employer and employee alike.

The following are just some of the most common contaminants that can be found in an office, and their effects on us:

-Microorganisms - Cause repeated colds and flus, absenteeism, loss of productivity
-Radon - linked to cancer
-Formaldehyde - Respiratory irritation, nausea, headache, suspected carcinogen
-Tobacco Smoke - Respiratory irritation, nausea, headache, suspected carcinogen
-Hydrocarbons/Organic Chemicals - Respiratory irritation, nausea, headache, eye irritation.

Call us at Air Purifying Systems & Solutions to find out how we can help you to ensure that your office/work environment is free of these contaminants and is healthy for your employees!

Walk-In Cooler Systems

Our Fresh Zone Electronic Air Purification System is a commercial-grade device that uses high-frequency ultraviolet light to generate a tiny amount of ozone- a naturally occurring substance found in the healthiest outdoor locations. The ozone destroys airborne microorganisms, completely eliminating them from refrigerated lockers and walk-in coolers.

That means airborne mold and bacteria can't circulate back to your food. Your meat, seafood, products and flowers stay fresher, longer.

We install the units in the refrigeration system, so ultraviolet light radiates directly on the cooling coil and the air being pulled across it. And we custom configure your units to take fill advantage or existing locker walk-ins, and minimize disruption. Typical installation takes as little as 2-4 hours.

Within three hours you'll begin to smell the difference!

Nursing Homes and Child Care Facilities

Many of our loved ones - parents, grandparents and children alike - spend a great deal of time in adult and child care facilities. Naturally we want them to be in the healthiest environment possible.

Air purifiers are in high demand in these places. Here are just a few examples of how our systems have made a difference in these commercial locations:

"...employees expressed their gratitude for relief of their allergic symptoms after only one week of your system's startup...and an incontinent odor detected on rounds vanished in minutes...I was surprised not to get a lingering scent."

"...we have seen fewer runny noses, heard less coughing and experienced fewer headaches."

"The air smells fresher and cleaner and the students seem to have had fewer colds this year. Parents are pleased to know that we are making every effort to protect our students and teachers."

Air Purifying Systems, Inc. manufactures, distributes and installs a complete line of BreatheEZ Air Purifiers for commercial and residential applications. Contact your representative today for more information.

The BreatheEZ Air Purifier

Now the air in your home can be sunshine fresh 24 hours a day, every day! BreatheEz Air Purifier can do this in a way that is affordable, safe, effective, and chemical-free.

BreatheEz Air Purifier improves indoor air quality for allergy, asthma, and sinus sufferers by destroying airborne pollutants caused by mold, mildew, smoke, and other pollutants, leaving a fresh, clean scent.

The BreatheEz Air Purifier is not an aerosol cover-up, not a filtration device. It uses no perfumes nor chemicals. The BreatheEz Air Purifier protects you from all forms of air pollutants even the ones you can't smell by producing a safe level of ozone that it injects into the air in your home. A high frequency ultraviolet light and the ozone it produces actually kill bacteria, fungus, viruses, and microorganisms, leaving behind only purified oxygen. Toxic gases are oxidized and form a barrier against radon. Airborne chemical compounds, smoke and particulate matter are precipitated and removed. So you and your family benefit not only by enjoying a freshened, odor-free home, but also from breathing healthy, purified air.
The trend toward making homes more energy efficient has resulted in many pollutants becoming trapped inside our homes. Now with the BreatheEz, you can have it all: an energy efficient, odor-free healthy home for your family and yourself.
